Project's details

App to Connect Local Food Producers and Restaurants
“As a restaurant, we are in the yellow pages; the growers are not. We want them to contact us” (Local restaurant owner)
“There is an unfortunate undersupply of local agricultural products to restaurants” (Local farm owner)
In the United States, only a shocking 14.6 cents on the consumer dollar goes back to the farmer on average; in comparison, 30.1 cents of that same dollar will go to packaging, transportation, wholesale and retail trade, and advertising.
Concerns expressed about “food miles” which claim up to 11% of carbon emissions output in the lifecycle GHG emissions highlight the environmental impacts of the convoluted process behind the distribution of raw food items
Shipping containers of food can be sent over thousands of miles to end up in restaurants built in cities who brand themselves as the “Farm to Fork Capital” (Sacramento) or “The Food Front” (Woodland), and in a city which hosts a worldwide-leading university in Agriculture (Davis), while their nearby farm or micro-grower neighbors could provide them with fresh produce - with the added benefit of increasing the marketability of those restaurants as supporters of a local movement and economy.
The app will function similarly to a “dating app” in the sense that producers and restaurant owners/chefs will be automatically “matched” to one another based on a set of parameters. This app is intended to increase direct farm-restaurant business. Providing this option to the public will have the desired effect of decreasing carbon emissions, improving agricultural education, and developing stronger local communities.
Students will develop a mobile app that matches small-scale food producers with restaurant owners based on their user profile information (location, product needs, etc.).
Mobile app development using React Native (or preferred cross-platform app development framework)
Development and deployment on Amazon Web Services Web & Mobile Apps (or preferred hosting/server/database platform)
User Profiling, Wireframing, UI/UX Design
