Project's details

Foot Ulcer Diagnosis App
Each year, more than 185,000 patients with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), Diabetes Mellitus (DM), or combined PAD/DM undergo leg amputation. Costs to treat lower extremity ulcers currently approach $25 billion annually and are expected to double in the next decade. When ulcer treatment is not effective, amputation is the outcome, and currently, 1.4 million people live with an amputation in the United States. Determining the diagnosis and correct treatment plan for patients with lower extremity ulcers is imperative, but as many as 50% of patients have delayed diagnosis and treatment. They may also receive fragmented care with multiple providers and do not have their own record of healing of the wound.
Students working on this project will design an application for patients and providers that can potentially integrate with the EPIC electronic medical record.

The application will:
1. Have an easy interface that allows patients to take a picture of their wound.
2. The application will analyze the size of the wound.
3. Patients will be able to take multiple pictures of their wound over time and the application will determine the degree of healing.
4. The application will be able to help diagnosis the cause of their wound using medical history questions and using the Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection scoring system.
1. Working prototype of the Foot Wound Application
2. Test the Application and make adjustments to it.
1. The ideal team will have experience with working with a clinician and be able to work independently as well as communicate needs for the project over time to be successful.
