Design of a patient-facing mobile platform for collecting asthma symptom data
The UC Davis Pediatric Telemedicine Program studies the impact of telehealth interventions on the health of children. We are designing a study to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of weekly patient monitoring for adolescents and young adults with asthma. We believe that a patient-facing mobile application would be acceptable to this patient population and could be used to collect study data in a secure and effective way. Depending on the outcome of the study, the application could be adopted in the future for use in clinical settings.
Students will design a mobile application for the weekly collection of asthma symptoms for patients with asthma aged 14-24. Patients will need to be able to access a six-question survey through an application or through a web browser. Students will also design a notification system to deliver text message reminders to patients on a prespecified schedule. The system must be HIPAA-compliant and secure. The data collected from the application should be able to be exported to a CSV file by the principal investigator and study analysts in a way that facilitates data analysis. If possible, students will create data visualization options that could be used by the research team or by a healthcare provider. Students will work closely with the research team on the development of these tools and will test and improve the product based on feedback. |
|
• A working HIPAA-compliant mobile and web application that can be downloaded by study patients • User interface for researchers allows export and visualization of data collected • Students will provide the source code in Github |
|
• Familiarity with mobile application development, data capture, and data visualization tools (flexible about platforms and programming languages) • Familiarity with HIPAA security requirements or willingness to learn • Interest in healthcare and/or adolescents • Positive attitude |
