Proper vehicle wheel alignment is essential for safe and efficient transportation. Wheel alignment consists of optimizing three measured attributes, camber, caster and toe through adjustments in the suspension. Traditionally, wheel alignment has been measured using a large, and expensive machine, installed in a fixed location (old school, we can do better). These machines measure these three values by reflecting laser light off of an apparatus attached to each wheel. The technician can then adjust the vehicle’s alignment accordingly to meet specifications laid out by the vehicle manufacture. My view is that this measurement process can be done with just a handheld device equipped with a LiDAR sensor, and ample processing power. As of recently, such a device exists. Both the Apple iPad Pro and the iPhone 12/13 Pro are equipped with the two needed hardware requirements. We just need to grab a 3D scan of a car, compute the alignment measurements either on the device or on a server, and communicate the results to the user with a clean interface. See PDF for project steps, motivation, resources needed, and images. | |
