Socializing PHI for personal benefit. Connecting Epic to the Gig economy
Personal Health Information (PHI) is securely protected by Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems but owned by individuals. This project seeks to create a way for individuals to share - in a safe controlled manner - certain PHI with gig economy or social media platforms to support health goals. For instance, bringing in vaccination or lab test status directly from a healthcare organization to a social media app such as Uber, Doordash, or Tinder.
Much has been made of vaccine passports, where a piece of paper or bar code can prove that a person is vaccinated for COVID-19. However, no tool exists for bringing this data into a social media platform. From a market perspective, both drivers and passengers in Uber would benefit from knowing if the other is vaccinated for COVID, and how recently they had been tested. But no way currently exists to take this data from Epic to the app. Similar Market based transactions are likely with other applications, such as door dash, or even Tinder where both parties have an interested in establishing the health status of another party before meeting in person. This project would seek to establish middleware where by any Epic EMR patient can share selected vaccine and lab data with applications of their choice, and an API where such applications can easily intake the data into their platform while giving patients the ability to stay in control of the data within carefully defined parameters.
Proof of Concept Epic FHIR API to Social Media API Connector where I, as the owner of PHI, can offer such data as i see fit through to social media apps in an automated fashion where i control the data, but can still leverage it for my benefit.
