Project's details

Design of An Interactive Educational Phone-based App for Clinical Ophthalmology: PocketOphtho
Ophthalmology physicians and trainees across the U.S. undergo regular assessments of knowledge in clinical ophthalmology. These include the Written Qualifying Exam (WQE) from the American Board of Ophthalmology, required for board certification; as well as the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP), administered to Ophthalmology residents in each year of training. These multiple-choice exams measure ophthalmic knowledge of residents, relative to their peers, in order to facilitate the ongoing assessment of resident progress and program effectiveness. While several online educational resources exist that include sample questions, there is a lack of interactive programs with high-yield content that help learners review the subject material, aside from traditional textbooks and lectures
PocketOphtho allows users to have access to condensed, high-yield content and clinical images validated by a team of board-certified Ophthalmologists. The existing codebase enables interaction with educational content in a question-answer format that stimulates active learning to optimize efficiency and performance on OKAP or WQE exams. The app is iOS-based, but expansion to dual support for Android system is also desirable. Participants will work with a team of Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmology residents, and medical students from the UC Davis Health system who are highly motivated to improve medical education, particularly in Ophthalmology.

The project team will help client brainstorm and design functionalities that can be built upon the existing codebase in Xcode to maximize user experience and app performance. Explorable features include integrated spaced repetition learning algorithm, filterable content for generation of self-quizzes, and navigation links to relevant resources.

The following features are desired:
• An aesthetically pleasing and intuitive user interface
• Filterable content and images based on subject classifiers
• System for saving progress in personalized profiles
• Method for content to be added, removed, or modified at a later time
• Performance log stratifying user data (e.g. percentage of content reviewed)
• A full-functional open-source phone-based interactive educational app
• iTunes store integration for beta-testing
• Clearly and comprehensively documented source code in GitHub is required
• The ideal team will have experience with development and deployment of iOS apps
• Knowledge of data storage and manipulation of a sustainable app
• Xcode
